Renewing your Istimara: what to have ready before FAHES

A Qatari ID and Istimara on a desk next to a car key

Renewing your Istimara in Qatar means passing a FAHES technical inspection and having valid insurance before you can register. Having your documents ready and booking FAHES a few days ahead is the easiest way to avoid a wasted trip.

What you need before you go

Have your Qatari ID (or residency permit), the car’s current Istimara, and proof of valid car insurance ready — FAHES won’t inspect a car without active insurance covering it.

If the car has any outstanding traffic fines, clear those first. An unpaid fine can block the renewal even if the car itself passes inspection.

What happens at FAHES

FAHES is Qatar’s official vehicle technical inspection. It checks the basics that affect road safety: brakes, lights, tyres, steering, emissions, and the general condition of the body and chassis.

The inspection itself usually takes well under an hour if the car is in good shape. If something fails, you’ll get a list of what to fix, and you’ll need to bring the car back for a re-check — which is the main reason renewals take longer than expected.

Common reasons for a failed inspection

Worn tyres, cracked windscreens, non-working lights, and expired window tint percentages are some of the most common, easily-avoidable fail reasons. A quick look-over a day or two before your appointment can save you a second trip.

When to start

Istimara renewal, and the insurance that needs to be active for it, can usually be started a few weeks before expiry. Starting early — rather than at the last minute — gives you time to compare insurance prices and fix any issue FAHES flags without the pressure of a deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew my Istimara without valid insurance?

No. Valid car insurance covering the vehicle is required before FAHES will process the renewal.

How long does a FAHES inspection take?

Usually under an hour if the car passes on the first attempt. Budget extra time if you suspect something (tyres, lights, tint) might need attention first.

What if my car fails the FAHES inspection?

You’ll get a list of the issues to fix, then need to bring the car back for a re-inspection before the Istimara can be renewed.
